The newly-created Institute for Cybersecurity and Digital Trust (ICDT) is working to create more confidence in the future of the connected world.

An ICDT Distinguished Lecture Series, planned throughout 2021, will introduce some of the brightest minds in cybersecurity to The Ohio State University community and beyond.

The last lecture of this series takes place May 17, with Professor Somesh Jha from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, speaking on the topic of “Trustworthy Machine Learning: Past, Present, and Future.”

Jha is the Lubar Professor in the Computer Sciences Department at the University of Wisconsin (Madison). His work focuses on the analysis of security protocols, survivability analysis, intrusion detection, formal methods for security, and analyzing malicious code. Recently, he is focusing more on privacy and adversarial machine learning. Jha has won numerous best-paper and distinguished-paper awards. He also received the National Science Foundation Career Award and is a fellow of the ACM and IEEE.

Prior speakers in the 2020 series included Professor Wenke Lee, discussing the topic of “Machine Learning and Security: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly,”and Prof. Xiaofeng Wang speaking on the topic “Confidential Computing: Challenges Today and Opportunities Tomorrow,” as well as Professor Christopher Kruegel addressing the topic of “Finding Vulnerabilities in Embedded Software - Distinguished Cyber Security Lecture Series”.

ICDT launched in 2020 through the Ohio State Office of Research, under the leadership of the university’s former Chief Information Security Officer Helen Patton and Professor Hesham El Gamal, chair of the electrical and computer engineering program.

The overall goal of ICDT is to foster collaboration among researchers from multiple academic disciplines, and develop solutions for complex cybersecurity and digital trust issues. Its leadership is preparing the next generation of workers, scholars and leaders to develop effective cyber trust solutions.

In time, the institute will partner with other educational institutions, government, military, and industry to identify and pursue emerging innovations.
